Background:
Appreciative of her experiences as a participant on Southwest Texas Conference Emmaus Walk #416 held at the Mount Wesley Conference Center, Kerrville, Texas, in March, 1990, Constance Bivens, Ed. D., of Hollywood, Florida, set out to purchase for the conference center, a painting which depicted the scriptural account of the Walk to Emmaus. When a suitable commercially available painting could not be located, Constance, with the help of Conference Center Director, George L. Eychner, approached a Kerrville artist, Frances Burleson, a participant on Walk #157, who had expressed interest in doing such a painting.
With encouragement from her husband, Clay "Burley" Burleson, and her Emmaus Reunion group, Frances researched the environmental background of Luke 24.13-34. After much work and numerous sketches, Frances was inspired to paint this beautiful watercolor. The original hangs in the Wilson Building at the conference center. Her scene depicts the risen Christ and the two pilgrims on the road to Emmaus under a foreboding afternoon sky. The village of Emmaus is visible in the distant foothills of Judea.
The painting was dedicated at Mount Wesley on March 26, 1994, at the Conference-wide Annual Emmaus Gathering. The artist has graciously donated all proceeds from the sale of prints to the Development Fund for the Mount Wesley Conference Center.
